Continue to expect delays along southbound South Main Street/US 1A at Ligon Mill Road intersection
Drivers should continue to expect delays along southbound South Main Street/US 1A in the vicinity of the Ligon Mill Road intersection daily from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Fred Smith Company will continue to close the outside southbound lane to allow crews to finish paving operations and install curb and gutter as part of the Ligon Mill Road Operational Improvements Project (LMROIP). The work is expected to continue through mid-December.
Signage and cones are in place to manage traffic flow and safely direct motorists through the work area. Again, delays are expected, so motorists may wish to avoid the area if possible and take an alternate route.
The LMROIP consists of widening the existing narrow corridor from two lanes to a four-lane median-divided roadway with left-turn lanes, bike lanes, curb and gutter and extra-wide sidewalks. In addition, crosswalks, pedestrian signals, and dedicated left, through and right-turn lanes will be installed at the existing intersection with South Main Street/US 1A.
These improvements are designed to significantly improve the mobility and safety of this corridor. Decorative stone retaining walls will also be installed to enhance the visual appearance of the area. A 2014 Wake Forest Bond Referendum initiative, the LMROIP is expected to be completed later this month. The total cost of the project is approximately $6 million. For more information, contact Engineering Director Joe Guckavan at 919-435-9439 or [email protected].
The Town of Wake Forest offers an interactive map that gives residents a user-friendly and convenient way to view local road closures and restrictions. Accessible under “Common Resources” on the homepage of the Town website, the Traffic Alerts Map allows visitors to point and click on current road and lane closures throughout Wake Forest. Motorists are encouraged to use the information to help plan their route and move safely through work areas.
Planned road closures and restrictions are necessary to allow for a variety of work. Weather and unforeseen circumstances occasionally prevent work from being completed as scheduled and make it unsafe to reopen lanes or streets when planned. When this occurs, town staff works with contractors to resolve the situation as quickly as possible and reduce impacts to the traveling public.
When traveling through a construction area, drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians are asked to be patient, proceed with caution, and obey flaggers. Drivers should get in the correct lane well in advance and constantly be on the lookout for vehicles merging into adjacent travel lanes as they approach a work zone. Drivers are also urged to double their following distances.
