Ligon Mill Operational Improvements
Project Overview
As a part of the 2014 Bond Referendum approved by voters, the Town of Wake Forest will improve the Ligon Mill Road corridor between South Main Street/US 1A and the Walmart driveway. This project is being completed in partnership with Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) and North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT).
The Ligon Mill Operational Improvements project consists of widening the existing narrow corridor from two-lanes to a four-lane median divided roadway with left-turn lanes, bike lanes, curb and gutter, and extra wide sidewalks. Additionally, crosswalks, pedestrian signals, and dedicated left, through, and right turn lanes will be provided at the existing intersection with South Main Street. These improvements will significantly improve the mobility and safety of this corridor. Decorative stone retaining walls will be installed to increase the visual appearance of the area.
The widening of this tight corridor will make a significant impact in the flow of traffic along Ligon Mill Road and provide improvements to the intersection with South Main Street.
Construction began in May 2020 and expected to be completed by mid-November 2021 at a cost of approximately $6 million.
The Town has worked with the adjacent businesses and residents and understands the need for this work to be completed. While motorists should expect delays during construction, access to all adjacent businesses will be maintained, but possibly limited at times.
Traffic Impact
Throughout the duration of the project, Ligon Mill Road will remain open for two-way traffic. However, periodic lane closures will be necessary. All lane closures will occur outside of peak travel periods and only occur weekdays from 9 am-4 pm and will not be performed over any holidays or holiday weekends.
As the project nears completion, occasional weekends or night closures may be necessary in order to perform critical work. The Town will post ample notice in advance of any potential closure via the Town Website, email lists, Nextdoor, Social Media, and Electronic Message Boards.
