Flaherty Park Pickleball Courts closed for renovations December 7-19
The Flaherty Park Pickleball Courts, 1226 N. White St., will be closed for the first of three phases of renovations beginning at noon on Wednesday, Dec. 7, and continuing through Monday, Dec. 19. Weather permitting, the courts will reopen on Tuesday, Dec. 20.
Temporary closures will also be required later this month and during the first part of 2023 for the second and third phases of work.
Phase one will include grading and concrete work to help ensure a smooth surface and positive water drainage. Future phases will feature the installation of new bleachers and fencing, along with a shade structure, paddle rack, and memorial bench.
Pickleball began in Wake Forest in 2009 on one chalked tennis court. Today, the sport has grown to include three indoor courts at Flaherty Park Community Center, four dedicated outdoor courts at Flaherty Park, and three indoor courts at Joyner Park Community Center.
The Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources (PRCR) Department partners with the Wake Forest Pickleball Club (WFPC) to offer clinics for beginners and leagues for more advanced players. Since January 2022, the WFPC has taught the sport to over 250 new pickleball players.
The WFPC also hosts tournaments throughout the year to raise money for improvements to the Flaherty Park Pickleball Courts. To date, these tournaments have raised over $28,000.
