Flaherty Park Pickleball Courts closed for final phase of renovations April 24-26
The Flaherty Park Pickleball Courts, 1226 N. White St., will be closed for the final phase of renovations Monday-Wednesday, April 24-26. Weather permitting, the courts will reopen at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 26.
During this final round of renovations, crews will install a shade structure and perform landscaping. Previous phases included grading and concrete work to help ensure a smooth surface and positive water drainage, and the installation of new bleachers, fencing, paddle rack, and memorial bench.
Signage will be posted prominently throughout the area to inform the public of the temporary closure. For more information, email Parks & Recreation Maintenance Manager Randy Hoyle at [email protected].
Pickleball began in Wake Forest in 2009 on one chalked tennis court. Today, the sport has grown to include three indoor courts at Flaherty Park Community Center, four dedicated outdoor courts at Flaherty Park, and three indoor courts at Joyner Park Community Center.
The Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources (PRCR) Department partners with the Wake Forest Pickleball Club (WFPC) to offer clinics for beginners and leagues for more advanced players. Since January 2022, the WFPC has taught the sport to over 350 new pickleball players.
The WFPC also hosts tournaments throughout the year to raise money for improvements to the Flaherty Park Pickleball Courts. To date, these tournaments have raised over $28,000.
Registration continues for the Wake Forest “Spring into Summer” Pickleball Tournament scheduled for Friday-Sunday, May 12-14, at the Flaherty Park Pickleball Courts. The entry fee is $45 per player, plus $10 for each additional event. The entry deadline is Monday, May 1. For more information, visit https://bit.ly/WFPickleball.
