Traffic Alert – South Main Street/US 1A
The Town of Wake Forest will temporarily close southbound South Main Street/US 1A in the vicinity of West Vernon Avenue Thursday, April 18, from 9 a.m.-noon. The temporary lane closure is necessary to allow crews to remove a tree whose roots are causing damage to the sidewalk and trip hazards.
The work may also require the temporary closure of both lanes along South Main/US 1A. In the event both lanes are closed, a signed detour will be implemented.
Flaggers, signage, and cones will be in place to safely direct traffic around the work area. Delays are expected, so motorists may wish to avoid the area and choose another route.
Then, during the week of April 22, from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. daily, crews will reduce to one lane with intermittent two-way traffic this same stretch of road (South Main Street/US 1A near West Vernon Avenue), so crews can replace the damaged sidewalk.
Flaggers, signage, and cones will again be in place to safely direct traffic through the work area. Delays are expected, so motorists may wish to avoid the area if possible and choose another route.
Grinding and ramping the trip hazards in the sidewalks are methods of temporary repair, but the tree roots will eventually raise the sidewalk again. To provide accessible sidewalks, the Town is removing the trees and replacing the concrete sidewalks.
