Renaissance Centre to host Art Exhibit & Reception Thursday

The Wake Forest Renaissance Centre will honor nine past and current art teachers from the Wake Forest Guild of Artists and display their work during a special Art Exhibit & Reception Thursday, Sept. 15, from 5-7 p.m. in the Renaissance Centre Arts Annex, 407 S. Brooks St. Honorees will include Erin Day, Cathy Boytos, Christy Colebank, Sara Roberts, Dr. Jane Steelman, Maureen Seltzer, Robyn Scott, Indigo Lamb, and Nicki Black.

The reception is free and open to the public. The exhibit will be offered through October. Anyone who is unable to attend Thursday’s reception, but would like to view the art exhibit, is invited to make an appointment at www.wakeforestrencen.org/event/art-exhibit-reception.

Erin Day works in a variety of mediums include oils, watercolor, ink, pastels, ceramics, and others. Her oil pastels are detailed, with a soft warmth that is pleasing to the eye. Continuing to focus on education, Erin has set out to gain her certificate to teach English as a second language with plans to couple this focus with Visual Art to break through more borders in education, including beyond the borders of the United States.

Cathy Boytos generates gorgeous artwork in colored pencil and is a certified Zentangle art instructor. Botanical illustration is another area she has mastered, bringing flowers to life. The intricate detail and magnificent colors of her colored pencil art brings to life animals, birds, people, and still life art.

Christy Colebank has been dedicated to education her entire adult life, working with all age groups. Christy works in a wide variety of mediums, including acrylic, colored pencil, multimedia, and photography. Her leaf photography will be on display during the show and is amazing.

Sara Roberts is a dedicated teacher, both as a current high school teacher and as an instructor at the Renaissance Centre. Sara works with a variety of media including, mixed media, photography, hand-built clay, enameled jewelry, and glass fusion. Her original collage art, utilizing personal photography from significant places or events, is vibrant, bright, fun, and never fails to bring a smile to the viewer.

Dr. Jane Steelman has been in the field of education most of her career. She is a national award-winning artist that works with pastels, oil & cold wax, stained glass, acrylics, watercolor, tradition oils, and alcohol ink, among a long list of art mediums. Her cutting-edge offerings utilizing augmented reality is a must see. Following a career in art education for K-12, Jane now teaches privately and at the Renaissance Centre.

Maureen Seltzer is a mixed media collage artist. Her artwork is comprised of tiny pieces of everyday life. Every inch of her art is covered in hand-torn strips of paper, with each piece being attached much like a painter would lay a brushstroke. Maureen takes her viewer on a journey with each piece of art as they observe the tiny pieces of everyday life that result in beautiful art. Maureen teaches for the Town of Wake Forest, the City of Raleigh, and the NC State Crafts Center.

Robyn Scott has always been an avid drawer and currently focuses on pen and ink and mixed media. The vibrancy and detail of her artwork is outstanding. A viewer can stare at each piece of art for hours and constantly see more exciting details. You don’t want to miss her amazing artwork.

Indigo Lamb is a teaching artist that works in a variety of media spanning oils, woodblock prints, ceramic sculpture, and mixed media. His native inspired work is vibrant and colorful and exciting to view. You will want to enroll your kids in Indigo’s upcoming class on the Foundations of Art for Youth at the Renaissance Centre. Indigo emphasizes the FUN in the FUNdamentals of drawing and painting, and this will be a delightful class for youth.

Nicki Black works predominantly in the mediums of digital art, acrylic, mixed media, music, pencil, encaustic, jewelry, and many others. Creating beautiful abstracts using the encaustic method (oil and hot wax) has resulted in many beautiful abstracts that will be on display at the Renaissance Centre, as well as a must-see demo at the reception. Nicki serves as a member of the Wake Forest Public Art Commission.
