Police remind residents to “call us” before posting on social media
The Wake Forest Police Department (WFPD) is reminding residents to report crime and suspicious activity to law enforcement before posting the information on social media.
Due to the popularity of Facebook and other social media, many people use those platforms to discuss suspicious activity and crime. The problem is that not all who describe such activity online also report it to the police. Simply put – tagging the WFPD on a social media post is not reporting a crime. Not even close.
By calling 9-1-1 or 919-556-9111 and reporting the proper way, WFPD can establish credible, official records of what's going on or what’s happened, along with the sources of the information. It's also easier than chasing down what are sometimes dubious or fake social media posts.
“We understand that most people who post warnings and similar kinds of information on social media are trying to look out for their friends and neighbors,” said Police Chief Jeff Leonard. “That sense of community and neighbor helping neighbor is one of the things that makes Wake Forest such a great place to live. We’re simply asking that you contact us first anytime you witness or experience unlawful behavior.”
Leonard says the police department investigates every lead it receives, so community cooperation is essential in combating crime.
“No law enforcement agency can function effectively without the assistance of responsible citizens,” he said. “So, we rely heavily on community assistance to catch criminals and deter crime. We take every call seriously and sometimes one call can make all the difference.”
Anyone witnessing or experiencing suspicious activity is urged to call 9-1-1 or 919-556-9111. In cases involving a vehicle, please note the vehicle’s license plate number and any other identifying or incriminating aspects, such as the color, make and model.
The WFPD also encourages residents to utilize official police communications resources for accurate updates and advisories, including the WFPD Facebook page and E-Notifier - the Town’s free email notification system.
